We are working with local organisations to promote a safe leisure craft season in the Solent throughout 2024.

Over the last few years, there has been a marked increase in the number of propulsion failure incidents within the Solent area. Most of these incident’s result from a general need for more maintenance. ABP Southampton has joined up with Cowes Harbour Commission, KHM Portsmouth, Portsmouth International Port and Langstone Harbour to raise awareness of the importance of proper engine maintenance.

Throughout the year, we will post updates relating to different aspects of engine maintenance to help local water users get the most out of the season.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail...

Preparation is vital for a stress-free season. The pre-season check can be broken down into 3 stages:

  1. Pre-launch—a visual check of the boat out of the water, including hull, keel, and rudder
  2. Post launch—a systems check, including engine, battery, and electronics
  3. Shakedown sail—a final check to see if anything has been missed and a chance to try every function, including putting the sails up and anchor down

This safety campaign is run in conjunction with Cowes Harbour Commission, ABP Southampton, KHM Portsmouth, Portsmouth International Port and Langstone Harbour.
