Colleagues at the Port of Barrow have announced that they will be taking part in The Great British Spring Clean in March 2018 and are calling on local businesses and volunteers to join them in the quest to organise a mass beach clean on Walney Island.

The spring clean challenge is open to anyone interested in making a positive difference to the local area, from community groups to local schools and residents. The litter pick will begin at The Roundhouse on Earnse Bay on Thursday 1st March 2018 from 10:30am. Groups will then move on to clean up the area surrounding Walney School, the local beach and the grass embankment.

Carl Bevan, ABP Port Manager, North West Coast, said: “We are committed to helping support the communities and environment surrounding our ports and are proud to be joining in The Great British Spring Clean this year.

“Together we can make a difference to the environment by cleaning up the areas on our doorstep, reducing waste and creating a great and clean place for everyone to enjoy.”

The Great British Spring Clean is a national initiative, which takes place on the first weekend of March, every year. The campaign aims to bring people across different parts of the UK together to clear up the litter that blights towns, villages, countryside and beaches.

Allison Ogden-Newton, the Chief Executive of environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy who are organising the campaign, said: “Littering is a serious issue that blights the beautiful beaches, countryside and cities of the UK. It also has a devastating effect on our wildlife.

“The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for everyone who cares about the rubbish scarring our country and threatening our seas to take a stand. We are delighted that ABP are joining the campaign and making a difference on their doorstep, and we’d encourage others to join them too.”

If you would like to become part of the spring clean team for the day, please contact ABP’s Beth Horan on 01229 822911, or email BHoran@abports.co.uk to register.
