ABP Hull donates quarter of a tonne to crafters

September 14, 2017

ABP’s port of Hull sparks up a relationship with a resource centre for children to not only encourage creativity but to also reduce waste destined for landfill.
The Hull Scrapstore received a quarter of a tonne donation including items such as packaging, wrapping paper and plastic cups from ABP’s engineering department and main offices in Hull. It will end up in the store for crafters to buy and be used by youngsters in free, creative workshops.
It is part of an overall waste review scheme ABP has implemented across the Humber ports; Hull, Goole, Immingham and Grimsby to find ways of preventing or reusing waste.
Lizi Sayner, a member of the Humber Waste Review Team, said: “We’re excited to be able to work with the Hull Scrapstore, as not only does it help us work towards a greener future, but it will also enable children to learn interactively by creating weird and wonderful objects from the items we have donated.
“We know this donation is just the tip of the iceberg as it’s from only two of our many departments across the Humber. We will continue to encourage our staff to get on board saving items for this educational and environmentally friendly cause.”
The Hull Scrapstore welcomes items that most people would automatically throw away such as packaging foam and ties, rope, colourful plastic boxes, scarp materials, coloured paper, plastic tubes… almost anything that’s suitable for children to create something with!
Tracey Thomas, resource co-ordinator from Scrapstore Hull, added: “We’re really grateful for companies such as ABP donating their unwanted items to us; as they’re almost always wanted by someone else to create something unique with.
“Not only do we benefit from donations, but so do companies…It helps to cut down waste costs, supports a more sustainable future and if they come to one of our workshops, they’ll gain the gratification of seeing the smile on children’s faces when they’re making items from their unwanted goods.”
The next Hull Scrapstore workshop will be during October half term- keep an eye out on their website www.scrapstorehull.co.uk
