Alex Martinelli of Grimsby Water Rats and Phil Christy, ABP Marine & Operations Manager, Grimsby show off the Dock Swim Challenge medals at Alexandra Dock

Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club swimming section, the Water Rats, will stage the town’s first open water swimming event in 15 years thanks to support from ABP.

More than 80 swimmers have put their name forward to take part in the Great Grimsby Dock Swim Challenge and ABP, main sponsor of the event, has given permission to use Alexandra Dock as the venue.

The swim will take place on the 18th September, with the start and finish located at the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Club on Lockhill Road, and will welcome open water swimmers from across the UK who can enter one of three events: a one-mile race, a two-mile race and a four-mile race for more experienced swimmers.

Event committee member Alex Martinelli explained why the club was eager to organise a competitive open water swim.

He said: “The town has a long history of involvement in open water swimming, most famously with channel-swimmer Brenda Fisher who was born in Scartho. We were a well-known venue back in the days of pioneering open water swimming in the 1950s and 1960s and the area has produced a number of successful English channel swimmers.

“With the increase in popularity of mass-participation sporting events in the region, such as the recent Grimsby 10k, we believe the reinstatement of our event may prove as popular, bringing positive publicity for the town and a sense of achievement for the participants.”

ABP Marine and Operations Manager Grimsby, Phil Christy has been instrumental in working with the Water Rats to ensure the event can go ahead.

He said: “The Dock Master has granted permission for open water swimming in the dock area for many years and ABP has always worked with the Yacht Club to ensure the area is as safe as possible for its sailing and swimming activities. We were delighted to be asked to assist with the organisation of the Dock Swim Challenge and we’re proud to be the main sponsor.

“We’re looking forward to watching the swimmers on the day and we’re pleased to be involved in an event that will not only put Grimsby in the sporting spotlight once more, but will provide spectators and participants with a fantastic day out.”

The Great Grimsby Dock Swim Challenge will take place on Sunday 18th September with the first race starting at 11am. For more information visit www.grimsbywaterrats.co.uk
