Work begins on Galloper Wind Farm project at the Port of Lowestoft

The starting gun has been fired and work is underway on one of the biggest renewable energy projects on the East coast at ABP’s Port of Lowestoft.

The port is now home to the offshore construction coordination base for the Galloper Wind Farm project, which commenced work on site in April. The wind farm will be constructed 27km off the Suffolk coast with 56 of the world’s largest wind turbines providing energy to UK homes.

Over the next two years, 40 personnel from the Galloper Windfarm Ltd (GWFL) and their contractors will be based at the port while the construction phase of the project is underway.

ABP Short Sea Ports Director, Andrew Harston said: “We welcome the Galloper Offshore Windfarm project to the OGN site at the Port of Lowestoft. Working with the renewables industry has resulted in a multi-million investment into the local economy.

ABP is committed to driving both the local and regional economy here in Lowestoft, and East Anglia overall. As such, we have invested in the necessary infrastructure to ensure the OGN Group is properly equipped to service the Galloper Wind Farm project.”

Toby Edmonds, Project Director for GWFL, said: “Our construction coordination base, with its excellent quay, office and laydown facilities will be a thriving hub of activity. Our team, which includes both existing and locally sourced personnel, will be located in the area until at least March 2018 and with that, we expect lots of positive spin-off benefits for local businesses.”

ABP’s Port of Lowestoft has positioned itself a renewable energy hub with other offshore wind farm projects utilising port infrastructure for their operations. The port supports around 1,200 jobs and contributes around £80 million to the economy.

When complete, the Galloper Wind Farm will be capable of generating up to 336MW, which is enough energy to power up to 336,000 homes.

Around 700 jobs are expected to be created during construction of the windfarm and around 90 jobs when operational.
