Fleetwood Haven Marina delivers boost to RNLI lifeboat station

RNLI lifeboat (William Street) undergoing maintenance at Fleetwood Haven Marina

Staff at the newly-enlarged Fleetwood Haven Marina have today put their new boat-hoist through its paces on behalf of the town’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeboat station. The hoist, capable of lifting a 75-tonne vessel out of the water, was used to move the 14m Tyne-class lifeboat, the William Street, onto the quayside in order to carry out routine maintenance including washing her hull and applying a fresh coat of anti-fouling paint.

The introduction into service of the hoist follows over £2m of investment in the Marina by owners Associated British Ports (ABP), which has also seen a 50% increase in capacity to some 450 berths. ABP’s Port Manager for the North-West, Paul Jervis, explains:

“We are delighted to be able to assist the RNLI with the maintenance of their vessels, and the new hoist enables us to offer a new level of service, both to organisations such as the RNLI and to our general marina customers. The improvements and enlargement that have taken place at Fleetwood make it an even more attractive base for sailing and pleasure-boating in Lancashire.”

Describing the work of Fleetwood RNLI lifeboat station, Coxswain Paul Ashworth said:

“Last year, Fleetwood lifeboat station was the busiest in the whole of the North of England, with William Street and our inshore lifeboat Saddleworth handling no fewer than 79 “shouts”. We get called to a wide range of incidents, from stricken fishing boats to kite surfers who have got into trouble and it is essential that our lifeboats are always in the very best condition, ready to respond at any time of day or night. RNLI lifeboats are crewed by volunteers, and we are entirely dependent on public donations, so we are very grateful to ABP for allowing us to use their boat-hoist for this essential maintenance to our lifeboat.”
